The worldwide oil industry uses different kinds of pressure transducers for drilling controls, as well as measuring processes and downhole tools. As the need to find oil in accessible places has become necessary, the equipment used for drilling, exploration and production has become ever more complex. Due to this, the use of pressure transducers has been rising. Here are some of the main uses for pressure transducers:
Drilling mud systems
Pressure transducers are important requirements in mud flow lines. Usually, pressure transducers that have a flush diaphragm are needed for these applications. This is mainly because the pressure port on a standard pressure transducer is just 3mm in diameter and it can get clogged with mud particles easily.
Downhole tools
Various kinds of pressure transducers are also used for monitoring pipeline oil pressure and hydraulic pressure in downhole tools. Generally, you will need high pressure transducers that have high operating temperature ranges for this application. This is mainly because they are exposed to extreme environments.
Core analysis
In this application, a sample of oil can be forced through a section of rock at high pressure. The pressure transducers used in core analysis should offer high accuracy measurement that ranges to 10,000 PSI. The pressure transducers should also be made from either monel or hastelloy so that the diaphragm does not get corroded.
In addition to these applications, pressure transducers can also be used for other purposes in the oil industry like measuring pressures in subsea hydraulic manifolds and intelligent pigs.
