Impress Sensors also offer a full range of pressure transmitters, screw-in transmitters, submersible probes and level control switches, all with SIL2 (Safety Integrity Level 2) approval for hazardous environments.

The product range is is targeted at safety and hazardous area applications, including process manufacturers, chemicals, oil and gas, nuclear and Atomic Weapons establishments. The devices are also suitable for medical device applications.

Sil rated pressure and level sensors and transmitter for safety critical applications

The process industry demands the highest degree of safety and reliability these days. The current Safety Integrity Level (SIL) international safety standard provides suppliers and users with a common framework on which to design products and systems for safety related applications. The standard also provides a more scientific, numerical approach to specifying and designing safety systems, enabling the nature of the risk to be quantified.

SIL means risk reduction to a tolerable level. The required safety level of a process plant is classified in accordance with the international IEC 61 511 standard and depends on the risk constituted by a plant. The IEC 61 508 standard describes the requirements of electrical, electronic and programmable electronic devices used in such plants. Both standards subdivide plants and devices into 4 safety levels, from SIL1 for low risks, to SIL4 for very high risks. The allocation to these safety levels is based on the use of a risk graph and depends on:

• Extent of possible damage

• Frequency of persons present in hazardous areas

• Possibility of damage prevention

• Probability of an unwanted event occurring

The standards also describe the type of risk assessment and procedures for integrating certain safety functions into sensors and plants. Generally, the significant hazards for equipment and any associated control system have to be identified by the specifiers or developers via a hazard analysis. The analysis identifies whether functional safety is necessary to ensure adequate protection against each significant hazard.

Examples within safety related systems for mechanical engineering include auxiliary disconnected systems; fire detector and gas warning systems; monitoring of turbines; safety interlock and auxiliary disconnected systems for machines; devices for medical applications; and remote monitoring based on network, handling and programming of procedural constructions.

XMD Smart differential pressure transmitter with display!

July 11th, 2009
XMD Smart differential pressure transmitter

XMD Smart differential pressure transmitter

The SMART differential pressure transmitter, XMD has been designed and developed for applications in the process industry, it has various possible applications such as level measurement of closed, pressurized tanks, pump and filter control, closed pipe flow measurement in conjunction with orifice plate, venturi or a nozzle.  It’s especially suited to the flow application due to the ability to switch the output from a standard linear output to a square root extraction where flow rate can be output.

The XMD has a differential pressure range from 75mbar through to 2 bar and with a static over pressure capable of 130 bar line pressures.  The calibrated pressure range can also be turned down to 10:1 times so for example a 75mbar range can give a fullscale output at 7.5mbar and still maintain the 130 bar line pressure!

The outputs available are 4-20mA as standard with the option of having HART® communication.  If this option is selected then ATEX approval comes as standard.  There are two possibilities for ATEX approval:

  1. Intrinsically Safe for Zone 0/1: II 1/2 G Ex ia IIC T4
  2. Flameproff enclosure for Zone 1: II 2 G Ex d IIC T5

The construction is rugged and designed for harsh environments, the electrical enclosure is aluminium die cast, powder coated and has teh option of integrating a smart display which makes programming of the following parameters easy: electronic damping of signal, offset adjustment up to 90% of FS and turndown of span 10:1 times.  The housing is a two chamber aluminium die cast case and is prepared for fitting of chemical seals to extend the application possibilities.  Applications for the XMD Smart differential pressure transmitter include:

  1. Petrochemical
  2. Pharmaceutical
  3. Chemical
  4. Energy and Power
  5. Food and dairy
  6. Paper & pulp industry

The optional display of the XMD is LCD with a visible range of 32.5 x 22.5 mm, the main display is 5-digit 7 segment with a height of 8mm whilst the secondary line is 8-digit 14 segment with a high of 5mm used for textual indication.  There is also a 1mm high 52 segment bar graph which runs along the bottom for clear and easy interpretation of the output from the device.  The whole device is rated to IP67 even with the display option!

XACT i Process Pressure Transmitter with ATEX & HART Communication!

July 8th, 2009

The unique Process Pressure Transmitter XACT i, incorporates the latest in piezo-resistive silicon sensing

XACT i Process Pressure Transmitter, ATEX & HART

XACT i Process Pressure Transmitter, ATEX & HART

technology combined with a digital microprocessor for compensation and calibration.  Together the result is a highly stable and accurate to <±0.05% pressure transmitter suitable for processing, pharmaceutical, food and dairy applications.

Pressure ranges are from 350mbar through to 35 Bar in Gauge or Absolute reference with 5:1 turn down of range as standard and still maintains the stated accuracy levels.  This is useful for customers to stock certain ranges and calibrate them for different applications when required so as to reduce the number of devices held on the shelf!

The Innovative housing on the top of the device which incorporates the LCD display is integrated to the pressure sensor module via an I2C interface.  The build procedure of the XACT i ensures that the device is not only accurate but has highly stability and repeatable performance.  By ordering the integrated temperature cooling element we can use the pressure transmitter in applications where the process temperature is as high as 300°C!!

The display on the device is a clear 3 stage LCD of 32.5 x 22.5mm which indicates the pressure, current, temperature and also has a text line at the bottom for easy programming.  The device can be programmed, on-site via the display and push buttons on the front of the device (accessed when the laminated safety glass is removed).  The parameters that can be adjusted are:

  1. Offset
  2. Calibration range
  3. Damping
  4. Engineering units
  5. Display function
  6. Password

As standard the display can be configured to show the current pressure, temperature of the media, current output and engineering units being displayed.  Other interesting and useful features include the ability to see the maximum and minimum process pressures and temperatures which is particularly useful when a plant event has occured and no data logging is used.  The device can then hold and display the maximum/minimum pressure and temperature during this time and be used to check the process operation.

We also have the option of having ATEX certified to zone 0: II 1 G EEx ia IIC T4.   The device can be manufactured to incorporate HART® Communication and for additional cost software and a HART® configurator can be supplied also.
